One of my favorite topics in soil science is the “paradox” that the coarser textured soils, like sand, have less pore space than the finer textured soils, like clays. Basically, sands might have larger pores, but their total pore space is smaller than clays. I tried to make a lesson plan that demonstrates this.
Then, I start to explore the “soil moisture curve.” You see, clay is also able to store more water in drier conditions (i.e. lower water table). What do you think? Soil texture and the soil moisture curve
